During the UC Davis November 2, 2012 workshop on Diversity Statements, we considered the following prompts in developing a diversity statement:

Warm-up questions:
  1. How much diversity is there in your field?
  2. What is the importance of diversity in your field?
  3. What are some different types of diversity?
  4. Why might institutions ask for a diversity statement?

Free-write questions:
  1. What are your past experiences with diversity, in any context?
  2. How would/do you create an environment that recognizes the value of diversity in your classroom? You may want to draw from the experience(s) you wrote about in part a.
  3. What are the benefits of the actions you listed in part b? You might consider:
  • benefits to your students
  • benefits to your field
  • benefits to learning
  • benefits to you as an instructor/scholar
